Samuel Swenson-Reinhold: Till We Have Faces & Monotheism v. Polytheism
This short reflection is one that is born more out of my own spiritual and theological questioning than it is direct notes from our discussions on this work. A question that came to my mind as I worked through Till We Have Faces was about Orual's relationship to the gods and how the Fox's teachings might have been different had the religious/cultural life of Glome been different. In many ways, the misdoings of King David in the Old Testament can be draw in connection to this very Greek-inspired telling of the story of Psyche; however, a big part of what changes David's character is his own belief in one true God.
Orual, however, rejects the gods and is a woman of little faith. A big part of what I'd like to know is how and if her character would have acted in a more conscientious manner than she did had there been only one God of myth. The Priest of Ungit likely would have behaved almost exactly as he did given he was the priest of just one divine being, but I wonder...what do you think? Does this idea have merit?
