The music in the world of fantasy

Another aspect I have noticed in the fantasy of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit is how much song there is. So much so it seems almost akin to a musical. Every people having some kind of song or sing at some point in time. The elves having sang in greeting, the dwarves singing the story of their family, and the goblins singing a song of gnashing and crashing and boiling and frying their enemies. Never before have I seen so much music put into a world and how it is incorporated is... somewhat odd? When reading the book I would have had a hard time picking up the pace of the song or what the tempo was, though maybe it is supposed to be up to interpretation. It certainly is attention grabbing, and in a way makes the races of the world seem more unique, each demonstrating their soul in a way through their song. It certainly helps build into a sense of otherworldly magic though, and certainly helps to enchant one into the world just a little bit more.
