Preserving whats special
In our class discussions on C.S. Lewis' The Space Trilogy we talked about a specific scene where in our character finds a grove of mysterious fruit. Each fruit being like a round perfect sphere with no apparent ways to open it. Yet he finds a way to poke a hole into it and drink of its juice. The taste and experience of it was completely indescribable and filled him with pleasure. Yet he does not go and drink from another, feeling that to do so would be wrong and it would ruin what might have made it so special.
This scene really make me look into some of the habits I maintain of trying to keep some things special. Things like eating our or alcohol still being kept for only breaks or the weekends or get-togethers. Yet this still is not very rare or special in comparison to cake. Cake being always a special treat to me and many other families too. If something feels so good to indulge in, why bother to keep it special? Practically speaking its so that I won't get sick of it. Too much of a good thing makes it bad, and if you overindulge then you might end up no longer liking what you had enjoyed so much. Perhaps its also because of a sentimental value. As we could very well just indulge in one thing after another until we tire of it as cast it aside. Yet for something to be comforting to one then to just end up throwing it away is heartbreaking in a way. A strange thing to be emotional about, yet I believe that it is an important thing to keep in mind when enjoying ones self. Lest your loves turn sour.
