Zack Olander - Myth vs. Scientism
We have been discussing the role and function of myth as well as the truth about the world that can be gleaned from it in this class. To me, this understanding of myth stands directly opposed to scientism, which is the belief that science can solve all our problems, answer all of our questions, and account for everything that happens in the world. It's not necessarily so popular among actual scientists who are usually more modest about their findings from their experiments, but it seems like among laymen and common people who may not be as educated on science, they place this pseudo-faith into science to objectively explain everything.
I think that this is unfortunate, because the truth that myth has in it is lost on most people. There is more than one way that one can validly experience and understand the world, which is something that it seems most people have forgotten. Nevertheless, the role that myth used to play in helping people understand the world and life lessons has been largely replaced by this view of science, for better or worse.
