Jonathan Middleton: Space Trilogy 2

In The Space Trilogy it is revealed that earth has been in essence quarantined off from the rest of the solar system. This quarantine where earth is ignorant of its surroundings and reality is a form of fantasy in that the 'reality' that earth and its residents find themselves is not emblematic of the true reality of their situation, instead it is a fabrication that is meant to isolate them. In this situation, fantasy represents the exact opposite of those educational properties that had been espoused by Chesterton and Lewis and only in leaving this fantasy world would the inhabitants be able to educate themselves, thought admittedly the effect is largely unchanged for the reader. The reader is still afforded the ability to think critically about the story and perhaps attribute some elements of this fantasy to their own world to think abstractly about their own situation.
