Jonathan Middleton: Love in Till We Have Faces

Till We Have Faces is a story of both of love and of jealousy. The two sisters, Orual and Psyche obviously did care greatly for one another. Otherwise Orual would not have went to save Orual from her fate on the mountain and Psyche would not have chosen to risk her relationship with her new husband had she not loved and trusted Orual. The two sisters obviously did care deeply about one another which makes the story all the more tragic.

However, even amongst family and love there can still be intense jealousy. It was clear that Orual was not only jealous of Psyche natural born beauty and the power that provided her but she was also surely jealous of her sisters apparent good fortune on the mountain despite her condition. This jealousy likely spurred Orual to be so forceful, even in her attempts to help Psyche.

Had the two sister's relationship been better and Orual trusted her sister enough to perhaps be more patient with her investigation into Psyche's new husband then perhaps the whole situation could have been avoided in the first place.
