Harmony with Nature?

A center of discussion in class this last week was the idea of humanity moving past the natural cycle and nature itself in order to create a more perfect world. This perfect world in question coming from C.S. Lewis's "The Space Trilogy". In one of the characters talks about his idea of a perfect tree, one completely artificial, made of aluminum, and completely sterile like the surface of the moon. We talked about how in the modern day we often have houses that are very clean, devoid of nature and other creatures and how far we have come in terms of advancement. Yet at the same time by seeking to dominate nature it appears that we have done more harm to ourselves by harming nature in an attempt to break this cycle. Yet I have a hard time seeing how one might be able to find harmony with nature without breaking or dominating it. Naturally humans tend to live hard and short lives where you are in a constant fight to survive. To live naturally would imply stripping away the enrichment and progress we have already gained as a species to try and let nature take back over. When we try to find a solution that does not involve giving up the progress humans have made it would necessarily mean that we are pushing past nature. As to live naturally means to live for survival, not for progress.

With this being said, I do not wish to imply an extreme that nature itself is bad. We are a product of it and even though we have pushed past it that does not mean we should destroy it. Rather we should seek to preserve it as much as we can. Live and let live being the best we can hope to achieve, at least currently.
