Danielle Hawkins: Power of man with Nature as it's tool
In one of my previous blogs I further elaborated on what I believed the verse in Genesis meant when we are given the command to rule over the earth. This idea relates to a part of Lewis' book The Abolition of Man.
In his last chapter he discusses he man's power over nature but ultimately it is "power exercised by some men over other men with Nature as its instrument" (55). This is a problem I see as I observe social injustices in the world. I think it's interesting that Lewis was able to also recognize this and see that it still applies today. For this to still be a problem makes me sad and honestly angry. I do not like that someone thinks they (for some reason) are better than someone else. There is no reason for someone to put someone else down just for the sake of power. This quote makes me think of the lower ninth ward in New Orleans. These people were basically stranded during Hurricane Katrina. Due to the cycle of poverty that people often get stuck in (often due to he power struggle between people who experience poverty and either the government or the rich), these people that suffered during that storm still suffer the after effects of the storm and other problems that occur down there (NIMBYism i.e. suffer pollution and toxic effects). When ever other storms occur, these people suffer harsh effects still. I do not know if it intentional, but I feel that who ever has the power (i.e the people with money) uses Nature (hurricane) to repress and keep the African American community stuck in this place of poverty.
Does anyone else know of any examples of man using Nature as a tool to repress/ have power over another man?
I think as people who are passionate about men being equal on all levels should keep others in check, especially those who are in positions of power/have huge influence. We can do this by stopping support (like not buying from corrupt industries or not voting certain people into power) the people who are power hungry and want to rule over other men.
