Characterization of Gollem

As I have talked about before in my previous blog post about The Hobbit this is my first step into the world of the Lord of The Rings. And as such I find I have an interesting perspective when approaching series. While I have not sat down and seen the movies I know of the names and apparences of some of the more important characters in the movies, so I have some preconceived notions about some of these major characters heading in. However, one character I have been very interested in the development of is Gollum. For instance I find myself questioning how I might have thought about him if the books and movies were not so popular and I did not have this preconceived image of him already in my mind. Invariably it has tainted what might be my own image of him. But I have attempted to apply what we have learned in class with the idea of simply attempting to see things as they are and I tried to allow myself to see something so iconic as if I had never thought about such a character before. Interestingly enough my own image became much more animalistic, with the appearance closer to a amphibian than any kind of humanoid. With this in mind I find myself applying this idea to the other characters as well and I have been enjoying the experience as I push deeper into the world of Tolkien.
